Where are the Nordic trails?
The Sandia Nordic Ski Club maintains approx. 4 mi of trails in the Sandia Mountains east of Albuquerque. The trails are accessible from Hwy 536 (Sandia Crest Hwy) at the 10k and Ellis Trailheads and also from the Sandia Peak Tram via the Service Road. From the 10k trail head cross the highway to the south and enter the lower meadow. From the Ellis Trailhead take an immediate left (east) off Ellis trail at the beginning of the Challenge Trail. Then take the trail just to the right at the sign which will take you down to the lower meadows and the 10k area. From the Tram, ski north on the service road to near the Ellis Trailhead.
INFORMATION FOR SKIERS
Be Prepared for Mountain Conditions
Sandia Nordic’s trails are at altitudes ranging from 10,000 – 10,350 feet. The effective oxygen level at these altitudes is reduced by roughly 30% from sea level. Be sure that you are fit for these conditions and that you carry water and food with you on the trail. The temperatures can vary from -20 F (record low) to 50 F (record high) during the winter skiing months. The average winter temperatures are 15 F (low) to 28 F (high) and are usually pleasant for cross country skiing. High winds are often present on the mountain, which can increase the risk of injury from falling trees and limbs. Be sure to dress in layers that can be adjusted according to the air temperature and the degree of exertion. While skiing these trails, it can rain or snow so a wind breaking, water repellant but breathable, outer layer is suggested. Also, sun protection for skin and eyes is strongly encouraged.
