Where are the Nordic trails?
The Sandia Nordic Ski Club maintains approx. 4 mi of trails in the Sandia Mountains east of Albuquerque. The trails are accessible from Hwy 536 (Sandia Crest Hwy) at the 10K and Ellis Trailhead parking areas and also from the Sandia Peak Upper Tram Terminal via the Service Road. From the 10K parking area, head uphill to the south, cross the Challenge Trail, and look for the Sandia Nordic groomed trail on the east edge of the 10K meadow. From the Ellis Trailhead upper parking lot, take the Challenge Trail approximately 20 yards downhill then turn right on the Klaus Trail. The lower Sandia Nordic trails branch off the Klaus Trail to the left just a few hundred yards from the start of Klaus and wind all the way down to the 10K parking area.

INFORMATION FOR SKIERS
Be Prepared for Mountain Conditions
Sandia Nordic’s trails are at altitudes ranging from 10,000 – 10,350 feet. The effective oxygen level at these altitudes is reduced by roughly 30% from sea level. Be sure that you are fit for these conditions and that you carry water and food with you on the trail. The temperatures can vary from -20 F (record low) to 50 F (record high) during the winter skiing months. The average winter temperatures are 15 F (low) to 28 F (high) and are usually pleasant for cross country skiing. High winds are often present on the mountain. Be sure to dress in layers that can be adjusted according to the air temperature and the degree of exertion. While skiing these trails, it can rain or snow so a wind breaking, water repellant but breathable, outer layer is suggested. Also, sun protection for skin and eyes is strongly encouraged.
